Agriculture contributes $2.6 billion, roughly 12%, indirectly and directly to the state's economy. However, another study claims that agriculture contributes 2.2 percent of the state's domestic product. In the year 2000, roughly 3 percent of the state's working population engaged in agriculture.
Due to the over-cutting and exploitation of the forests over the last two centuries, logging has fallen making the forests of Vermont less attractive. Though the decline of farms, due to ecological succession resulting in a re-growth of Vermont's forests. Nowadays, most of Vermont's forests are secondary. The state of Vermont as well as non-profit organizations are actively encouraging re-growth and careful forest management. More than 78% of the land area of the state is forested. More than 85 percent of that area is private, non-industrial forestland owned by individuals or families.
There were 543 organic farms during the year 2009. 23% of the vegetable farms were organic, whilst 20% of the dairy farms were organic. Organic farming increased during 2006/2007, but leveled off during 2008-09. Nor are any expected for the year 2010.
An essential and growing part of the economy of Vermont is the sale and manufacture of fancy foods, artisan foods, and novelty items trading in part upon the Vermont "brand" which Vermont manages and defends. Examples of these specialty exports consist of the Vermont Teddy Bear Company, Cabot Cheese, Fine Paints of Europe, Vermont Butter and Cheese Company, ginseng growers, several micro breweries, Lake Champlain Chocolates, Burton Snowboards, King Arthur Flour, and Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream.
